GEO vs SEO: what actually differs.

Same foundation, different target. One competes for a position in a list; the other competes to be the name inside a sentence. Here is where that changes your work.

The short answer

SEO is not replaced. It is the part you control; GEO adds the part you do not.

Everything that makes a site crawlable still matters. What changes is what you are competing for, and who gets to decide.

  1. The unit of competitionSEO: a position in a list of ten links. GEO: whether your name appears inside one written answer, and in what words.
  2. The foundation is sharedCrawlable pages, clear structure, real facts, fast delivery. Skip these and neither works.
  3. The measurement differsSEO: rank, impressions, clicks. GEO: named or not named, per question, per engine, per month.
  4. The control differsYou can largely determine your rank. You cannot determine what a model says, only what it has to read.
Six differences that matter

Where the two practices actually part company.

1. What you are competing with

In SEO your competitor is the page in position three. In GEO your competitor is the answer itself: a model that synthesises several sources into a paragraph and may name four of them, or none. Being on page one of Google does not guarantee being named in the paragraph a buyer actually reads.

2. What content has to do

SEO content covers a keyword field: a page for each phrase you want to rank for. GEO content has to survive being quoted. That means short self-contained sentences, facts stated plainly, and a page per question rather than a page per keyword. A page can rank well and still be useless to an answer engine if every claim depends on the paragraph before it.

3. Where the answer comes from

A search result points at your page. An AI answer is assembled from everything the model has read: your site, directories, partner pages, articles, forum posts. This is the single biggest practical difference, because it means half the work happens off your domain. Our longer piece on this covers what you can do about it.

4. How it is measured

Rank tracking is a solved problem. GEO measurement is not: you fix a set of buyer questions, ask them on each engine, keep every answer word for word, and compare month to month. Counts, not percentages, until there are enough months. Anyone showing you a single screenshot as evidence is showing you an anecdote.

5. Who decides

SEO has a documented, if opaque, algorithm with published guidance you can follow. Answer engines decide per question, per user, per run, and they change silently. The practical consequence: build for the pattern, not for one observed answer.

6. How it fails

SEO fails by ranking fourth. GEO fails by not being mentioned at all, which is quieter and harder to notice: there is no page-two to look at, only an answer that names other companies. That is why the baseline has to be recorded before you start.

In practice

Four things that change on the site, one that does not.

  1. One consistent entity recordLegal name, registration, address, what you sell and who you serve, worded identically everywhere a machine can read it.
  2. One page per buyer questionNot per keyword. The question is the unit an answer engine matches against.
  3. Facts in the text and in structured dataSo the same claim can be read by a crawler and by a person without contradiction.
  4. Third-party mentions you do not writeDirectories, round-ups, partner pages. Slow, unglamorous, and decisive.

What does not change: technical health. Crawlability, speed, sitemaps, canonical tags, internal links. GEO does not make those optional, it makes them the entry ticket. Our own site scores 100 on the standard SEO audit checks, and that is the floor, not the achievement.

Questions we get asked

Four straight answers.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Search still produces most qualified traffic for most businesses, and shopping, local and transactional searches still happen on a results page. GEO is an additional surface where a different kind of decision gets made, usually earlier and in words rather than clicks.

Do I need both?

If your buyers ask an assistant for recommendations, yes. If everything you sell is searched by part number and bought on price, SEO alone is the better spend. Be honest about which one you are.

Does GEO work help my Google rankings?

Indirectly. Consistent entity data, structured markup and a page per question are also good SEO. But citations in AI answers are not a ranking factor, and nobody can promise they move your position.

How do I explain this to my boss in one line?

“SEO gets us into the list. GEO gets us into the sentence above the list.” Then show the baseline: the ten questions, the answers, and whether we were named.
